Where it all began...

Picture
Our sweet girl!
Our journey to healthy skin care began because of our oldest son.  When he was just a baby, his face began to break out, he looked kind of windburned at first.  Eventually he would rub his face on everything, trying to relieve the itching, until his poor little cheeks would bleed.  Our pediatrician prescribed numerous creams, lotions, steroids, and even allergy medicines, but eventually referred us to a dermatologist because nothing worked.  The dermatologist quickly diagnosed our son with eczema, and told us that almost anything could be a cause of flare ups.  We used special soap and lotion that he recommended, got rid of our dogs on his advice, and closely monitored our son's diet and activities.  The worst offenders we found were artificial fragrances, with lots of lotions and soaps being extremely hard on his poor skin.  Being in the nursery at church was a sure cause of a breakout the next day from the well-meaning nursery workers' perfume.  Milk and milk products were also a problem, but only if they got on his skin.  As a small child, try as we might, we never really did more than improve his eczema, which is not at all unusual for eczema sufferers.  Of course improvement is something, but we were never satisfied that we couldn't help him more.  More and more research led us to think much more carefully about what we were putting in our bodies, and then to what we were putting on them.  The more we researched, we realized the saying, "you are what you eat" could apply to what we put on our bodies, just as much as what we put in them.  The skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs anything you put on it.  So the steroids, creams, and lotions we used for years were all being absorbed into his little body.  Wow.  That was scary.  Do you know what is in store-bought lotion?  Yuck.  We won't get into all that right now, but the point is if you wouldn't eat it, you really shouldn't put it all over your body.  We needed something better.  Our oldest son had always hated lotions because they hurt his skin and most left him greasy or sticky.  Our little girl had come along by this point, and she loved to slather anything smelly on herself, but we didn't want her using that stuff!  We needed something better, and we found it.  Using only natural ingredients, and using high quality moisturizing ingredients rather than fillers and cheap additives, with no artificial preservatives or fragrances, we have found solutions.  Our son still suffers from eczema, but it is nothing like when he was little.  He actually asks to put lotion on now!  It doesn't hurt or feel greasy, it soothes and heals, which was what we were trying to do all along!  Here's a little disclaimer, our products are made out of things you can eat, but please don't, they are not made as food!  Also, we are not doctors, just everyday people, so we can tell you what has worked for us, but it is not intended to be medical advice.
You might ask where the name "Sweet Girl Bath and Body" came from. Well, we have four boys, and two girls.  The boys are sweet too, but somehow it doesn't have the same ring.
